The Visual Artisan
Sometimes the desire to create falls outside and in-between the genre lines of visual art and storytelling. Alyson Perry, a young photographer and woman of many trades, uses poetry and drawing to develop the emotion found at the heart of her photographs. The images themselves, convey the whimsical memory of youth and quiet observation.

"Raise High the Children" plays with the figure of swings twisted around swing-set poles and water towers, creating an asymmetrical pattern. The old paint, metal beams, and open field might be a sight found in any old town. The low perspective, and the emptiness of the playground, turn these elements into a surrealist vision: so we can almost hear the creak of the oscillating chain and smell of warm summer air.
"Backhand" depicts a man's hands on a public bus in the Dominican Republic. The photograph seems spontaneous and secretive, as if captured in the moment from the back row. It is the glimpse of a fleeting instant, when a stranger's body appears transfixed in a dance.

In "South," the landscape is left open to individual imagination. A figure is discerned in blurred motion, moving his arms as if preparing to take flight. The muted colors are a foggy dream, and the crooked field invokes the tilt after landing or before taking off.
